Community Connection Expands Practical Support for Resident-Led Activities

Accessible spaces, introductions and transport help residents maintain a social life after relocation.

A place to begin

LifeCorp is expanding Community Connection following a six-month service review at four residential locations. Resident Services coordinates accessible meeting rooms, introductions on request and transport to resident-led activities using existing Daylight Recreation facilities. Residents choose whom to meet and may attend without agreeing to a personal introduction.

Service review

Between July and December 2024, 120 consenting participants completed the same entry and follow-up questionnaire. At entry, 72 reported fewer than one meaningful social conversation in a typical week; at follow-up, 43 reported that frequency. This is a change of 29 people within the same responding group, rather than an estimate of a population-wide effect. Twenty further participants lacked paired questionnaires and are excluded from that comparison. There was no untreated comparison group; other life changes and selective response may account for some improvement. The review measured reported contact, not clinical outcomes.

Residents set the activity

Participants established a repair afternoon, a small reading group and a weekly shared lunch. Jo, a participant who authorized this account, said: “I needed a lift and somewhere I could hear the conversation. After that we made our own plans.” Staff arrange access and transport; residents decide whether a group continues. Existing friendships remain outside the programme unless residents request practical help.

Next operating period

Resident Services will retain accessible transport and resident-led scheduling as core provisions. Future evaluation will include people who stop attending and separate the number of activities supplied from the relationships residents find worthwhile. No health benefit is asserted on the basis of this review.
